Connecting East and West is particularly important for Estonia as a strategically located transit and border country, said Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications Juhan Parts at the TEN-T pan-European transport conference held in Tallinn on Thursday.
"Developing the transport network is also important from the perspective of our neighbors and the entire Baltic Sea region. Therefore, Rail Baltica alleviates one of the most serious bottlenecks for Estonia so far - our peripheral location in Europe," said Parts.
The Minister highlighted the European Commission's progress in developing a single European transport network. One of the most important of these is the development of TEN-T policy objectives for 2050. Together, they have mapped out key transport infrastructure projects, the development of which is important in order to achieve the European Union's objectives for 2020.
"I am proud that Estonia is the first country in the world to create a nationwide electric car system," said Parts and invited conference participants to think about how to use existing infrastructure systems more efficiently with modern information technology to make the movement of goods and people easier.
The minister pointed out in his speech that Estonia has historically played an important role in the movement of goods. As a member of the Hanseatic League, Tallinn received international recognition for good trade practices in 1248, when Tallinn was granted Lübeck city rights. As part of the Silk Road, we have contributed to global trade for centuries. "Today we want to give a new dimension to Estonia's strategic importance in connecting East and West," said Parts.
TEN-T (Trans-European Transport Network) is a pan-European transport network development programme created by the European Commission, with the aim of supporting and developing important transport infrastructure projects. The TEN-T conference, which is being held for the sixth time, will take place in Tallinn this year from 16 to 18 October.
