At the beginning of this year, construction work began on the large Kangru traffic interchange near Tallinn, where the first concrete works have already been completed.

On September 29 last year, the Estonian Transport Board, OÜ Rail Baltic Estonia and GRK Eesti AS signed a contract for the construction of the Kangru traffic interchange on the border of Kiili and Saku municipalities. Following design work, contractors began construction on the first sites this spring.

The Kangru traffic junction project will build five reinforced concrete structures – four viaducts and one light traffic tunnel. Three of these viaducts will cross the Rail Baltica railway route and one will cross the future four-lane Viljandi Highway. One of the viaducts crossing the Rail Baltica route is intended for light traffic. A light traffic tunnel will be built under the Viljandi Highway to ensure safe traffic opportunities for road users.

Senior Project Manager, Rail Baltic Estonia Vahur Loo According to Loo, work is currently underway on reinforced concrete structures. "The Männiku light traffic tunnel has been concreted, pile work has been completed on the Männiku light traffic viaduct, as well as on the Raku and Raudalu viaducts. Various preparatory work related to the construction of the traffic junction continues, such as the establishment of storage areas for aggregate material and the transport of aggregate material to the site," explained Loo, who said that in addition to the main contractor GRK Eesti AS, eight other subcontractors are working on the construction of the new traffic junction.

During the construction of the Kangru traffic junction, the intersections of the Viljandi highway, the Kurna-Tuhala state road and the Rail Baltica railway will be resolved. During the works, a light traffic road will be built, leading from Kangru village to Raku Lake, and the current intersection of the Viljandi highway and the Kurna-Tuhala highway will be converted to a multi-level crossing, which will ensure greater traffic safety. In addition, the Viljandi highway will be built to four lanes for a length of 2,5 km, which will be 300-400 meters west of its current location.

This year, the works will mainly take place between the current Viljandi Highway and Lake Raku, away from road traffic. Traffic is organized according to a scheme coordinated with the Estonian Transport Board, and drivers entering the area must follow the traffic control devices installed at the site.

The construction contract is worth 21,2 million euros, plus VAT. The construction work is being commissioned by the Estonian Transport Board. The construction of the Kangru traffic interchange is being financed 100% by the European Recovery Instrument.
