Construction work on the Rail Baltica main route will also begin in Harju County in the second half of the year.

While Rail Baltic Estonia announced the first construction tender for the main railway route a month ago, the next section is already in the tender today.

"If everything goes according to plan, we will be able to start construction of the Rail Baltica main route in Harju County as early as this autumn, where the builder will have to tackle the section of the route starting from the Ülemiste terminal. We definitely want to announce at least a few more construction tenders for sections of the main route this year," explained the Chairman of the Board of Rail Baltic Estonia Anvar Salomets.

According to the head of Rail Baltic Estonia, approximately 30 kilometers of the Rail Baltica main route could be put up for construction this year. This would mean that approximately 40 kilometers of the Rail Baltica railway would already be under construction by the first half of 2024.

Bids are expected for the tender announced for the construction of the first main railway section in Harju County until March 16, 2023. The estimated cost is 36,125 million euros.

The construction section, which starts from the east side of Ülemiste station, is 4,8 km long and runs to the intersection of Lagedi Road in Soodevahe, Rae parish. The construction section also includes partial construction of the embankment of the Ülemiste rolling stock depot, and the embankment of the railway section of the prospective passenger car loading station must also be built.
The width of the embankment of the main route to be built in this section is 14 to 20 meters, and if the procurement is successful, construction work is planned to begin in the fall of 2023.

Along with the railway embankment, the necessary drainage, cable ducts, land improvement systems, retaining walls, and relocation of various utility networks will be constructed. A culvert will also be built in the railway embankment on this section to ensure passage for small animals.
