The joint tender for the construction of the first phase of the Rail Baltica joint terminal, launched in November last year, was won by AS Merko Ehitus Eesti and KMG Infra OÜ. The contract is worth 44,8 million euros, making it the largest Rail Baltica contract in Estonia to date.
"The development of the Rail Baltica railway and the construction of related facilities will accelerate significantly this year. I am pleased that we have already reached the conclusion of the second construction contract for such a complex and important transport hub as the Ülemiste joint terminal, which will result in the completion of the underground part of the new terminal building," said the Chairman of the Board of Rail Baltic Estonia Anvar Salomets.

According to Salometsa, the first contracted construction works in the Ülemiste area will begin in the coming months, but their impact on current train traffic will be minimal. The works will be carried out in stages, with the final stage scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
Last week, a construction contract (27,2 million euros) was signed with GRK Eesti AS and GRK Suomi OY for the reconstruction of the railway infrastructure. In addition, design work has also begun on the northern outdoor areas of the Ülemiste joint terminal. “As a next step, we want to announce a tender for the construction of the areas surrounding the terminal this year and the construction of the terminal building in 2024,” explained Salomets.
"Together with good partners from KMG Infra, we are pleased to lay the foundation for Estonia's most important and inherently unique public transport hub, where train, air, land and sea passengers will meet within a short tram ride. In the future, Ülemiste Terminal will be a starting, ending and intermediate station for many Estonians and our guests," said the Chairman of the Board of Merko Ehitus Eesti Ivo Volkov.

The contract signed today with Merko Ehitus Eesti and KMG Infra covers the construction of the railway support structures of the Ülemiste joint terminal, which will result in the completion of the concrete part of the future underground floor of the terminal, which will be named Linda, and other underground communications necessary for the railway facilities. The construction of the new structures will take place after the demolition of the existing railway and must be completed before the construction of the new railways, requiring close cooperation between the infrastructure contractor and the terminal construction contractor.
The estimated cost of the construction procurement was 66,5 million euros. The contract signed with the joint bidders who submitted the best bid is 44,8 million euros (+VAT), 85% of which is financed by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
The design work for the Ülemiste railway infrastructure was carried out by OÜ Reaalprojekt and OÜ AllSpark. The architectural solution for the Ülemiste terminal was designed and developed by Zaha Hadid Architects and ESPLAN OÜ.
