Rail Baltic Estonia OÜ and the Tallinn Environmental and Municipal Department signed a joint procurement construction contract with Leonhard Weiss OÜ for the construction of the so-called Tunnel No. 5 at Ülemiste railway station.
The tunnel will allow pedestrians and cyclists to move from Ülemiste Road under the railway line through the Ülemiste Center in the future.
"The development of the Rail Baltica Ülemiste joint terminal is a much larger-scale project for improving urban space and mobility than just building railway infrastructure and a station building. The under-railway tunnel, intended for pedestrians and light traffic, will in the future be part of the city's bicycle path network and will connect two city districts much more effectively in just a few years," said the Chairman of the Board of Rail Baltic Estonia. Anvar Salomets.
The new, 32-meter-long and 15-meter-wide tunnel will be located approximately 130 meters west of the current Ülemiste stop tunnel and the new tunnel that will be built in the immediate vicinity as part of the Ülemiste passenger terminal. Construction of Tunnel No. 5 is expected to begin in June of this year and the facility will be completed in March 2027.

The construction works are technologically very complex, as the works must be carried out under operating railway conditions and the closure of the entire railway traffic is not planned during the construction. In addition, the interim deadlines and the final deadline for the execution of the construction contract have already been matched with the current construction contracts for the 1520mm infrastructure construction works and the Ülemiste passenger terminal railway facilities being carried out by Rail Baltic Estonia OÜ.
The cost of the construction contract is 3,6 million euros (+VAT), of which 400,000 euros will be financed from European Union funds and the rest from the budget of the city of Tallinn.
