Framework agreements are being prepared for the Rail Baltica project to continue archaeological research along the proposed railway route. The framework agreements are already part of the third phase of research.
During the preparation of the Rail Baltica regional plans, a survey of archaeological values (first stage) was carried out as part of the strategic environmental impact assessment. This identified areas where more detailed studies were required to determine these values and delimit potential discovery areas. Based on the results of the initial stage of preliminary studies, the second stage of archaeological research was carried out: a walk along the entire route, or archaeological base camp. This is landscape monitoring and reconnaissance with the aim of specifying the location of archaeological sites and identifying antiquities.
The survey data will now be supplemented with maps prepared as a result of geodetic surveying (topogeodetic surveys). They can be used in the preparation and implementation of more detailed archaeological surveys. They are also necessary for the preparation of construction designs for the Rail Baltica railway facilities and other related structures, and for carrying out archaeological monitoring and excavation during construction.
Based on the mapping, a research task is prepared for each location, based on which archaeological research of the antiquities is carried out. During this, the cultural layer is identified, buildings and soil layers from different periods are defined, and their order of formation is determined, as well as the preservation and condition of structures of cultural value. If necessary, the cultural layer is examined and documented.
In total, at least 26 archaeologically interesting sites in Harju, Rapla and Pärnu counties are planned to be investigated. The aim of the studies is to ensure the protection of cultural values in the area of construction of the Rail Baltica railway facilities and other related structures and to obtain new information about the cultural heritage associated with the antiquities.
