As part of the work related to the construction of Rail Baltica, the reconstruction of Soo Road will begin in Saku rural municipality on July 20, as a result of which a new asphalt road, pedestrian crossing, and street lighting will be completed between the Saku township and the future Rail Baltica Saku stop by the end of the year.
During the construction period, until December 31, Soo Road will be closed to through traffic, but access will remain guaranteed for local residents and property owners throughout the construction period.
The swamp road is currently an uneven and sometimes sunken gravel road that runs through a swampy and overly wet area. The goal of the new solution is to improve traffic safety in the area, make the connection between Saku and Lokut more convenient, and create a safe way for pedestrians and cyclists to move around.
"The reconstruction of the swamp road will transform the road, which was previously gravel-covered and located in difficult soil conditions, into a modern and comprehensive traffic corridor. In addition to the new roadway, we will build a lighted pedestrian crossing, renew the railway crossing and improve the drainage of the entire road section," explained Reio Lõhmus, project manager at RTS Infra Eesti OÜ.
The width of the designed road surface is 6 meters and the road consists of two 3-meter wide lanes. A 3-meter wide asphalt-covered pedestrian path will be built on the south side of the swamp road, which will be separated from the road surface by a green belt and ditches. The speed limit will be 50 km/h on the entire reconstructed section.
Construction work will begin in July.
Preparatory work and installation of traffic management will begin in July. From July 20 to December 31, 2026, Soo Road will be closed to through traffic due to construction work. The closure will affect a section of Soo Road approximately at kilometers 0,3–2,2, and road users will be rerouted via the local road network.
Local residents and users of properties in the construction area will maintain access to the properties during the works.
"We ask road users to observe temporary traffic regulations and take into account that during the works, more construction equipment may be moving in the area than usual. We will organize the work in such a way that access for local residents is guaranteed and the disruption caused by construction activities is as minimal as possible," added Reio Lõhmus, project manager at RTS Infra Eesti OÜ.
The railway crossing will also be renovated.
The project will reconstruct the existing Saku Soo railway crossing and build a separate railway crossing for pedestrians next to it. The railway superstructure will be renovated, new reinforced concrete slabs will be installed, and the area around the crossing and the crossing will be improved. The work on the railway crossing will be carried out in cooperation with the railway infrastructure owner and in accordance with railway safety requirements.
During the road construction, 16 driveways will be built and new under-road culverts will be installed. The project includes six DN 400, three DN 500, one DN 600 and four DN 1200 culverts. The ditches will also be reconstructed and stormwater drainage will be improved along the entire road section.
Illuminated pedestrian walkway and new landscaping
The new pedestrian path will receive street lighting. A total of 47 metal lighting poles will be installed, 45 of which will be six meters high and two will be eight meters high. The railway crossing and pedestrian crossing area will be illuminated with a special solution.
The works will also include landscaping along the roadside. According to the project, 145 acacias and 35 glossy ash trees will be planted, and two rest areas with benches with backrests and trash cans will be built. The green areas will be restored and grass will be sown on them.
The project is commissioned by Rail Baltic Estonia OÜ and the construction work is carried out by RTS Infra Eesti OÜ. The contract value is 1,735,766.25 euros, plus VAT.
