Construction work on the first sections of the Estonian main route of the Rail Baltica international railway will begin in the spring of 2024. Today, Rail Baltic Estonia announced tenders for the construction of the substructure and crossings of the next 52,6 km of main route.
With the route sections that will soon be awarded contracts, construction work should begin on the 74-kilometer Estonian section of Rail Baltica, which constitutes more than a third of the entire length of the main Estonian route, within a year at the latest. In Harju County, the railway will be built in its entire length from the Ülemiste passenger terminal to the county border.
“The construction of the Rail Baltica railway is undoubtedly our priority for 2024 and the years to come. In a year, we want to see active railway foundation construction underway on more than a third of the future railway in Estonia. This will allow us to stay on schedule, where we could start train traffic in 2030,” said the Chairman of the Board of Rail Baltic Estonia Anvar Salomets.
According to Salomets, the newly announced construction tenders for the main line will likely be the last to be resolved in such short sections. “We are changing the procurement strategy for the procurement of the remaining railway substructure and superstructure, and we are currently also looking for a consultant to proceed with the so-called alliance model,” Salomets explained.
Construction tenders for five main route sections in Harju and Rapla counties were announced today: Soodevahe – Kangru; Kangru – Saku; Saku – Harju/Rapla county border; Hagudi – Alu; Alu – Kärpla.
On these sections, more than 20 railway crossings have already been built or are under construction.
The estimated total cost of the announced procurements is around 400 million euros. The duration of the construction contract is 40-48 months, depending on the section.
