Today, one direction of the Assaku viaduct on the Tallinn-Tartu highway was opened to traffic, marking the completion of work at the intersection of the future Rail Baltica railway and an important traffic artery.

The construction contract with AS TREV-2 Grupp, which carried out the work, was signed at the end of 2021, and construction work on the Assaku viaduct began in April of this year. The works were commissioned by the Estonian Transport Board. The official deadline for the completion of the construction work is 15.10.2023, which means that the viaduct was completed 11 months earlier than originally planned.
The road elevation did not change during the construction of the road viaduct, and in the future the railway viaduct will be built in a depression below it. The total length of the viaduct, built on State Road No. 2 Tallinn-Tartu-Võru-Luhamaa at kilometers 9,75-10,0, is 64 meters.

"Although the official deadline is 11 months away, the builder has now completed the majority of the construction work. There is still marking work, landscaping and individual repairs to be done. This shows very good work organization and cooperation between the client and the contractor," explained the senior project manager of Rail Baltic Estonia Vahur LooAccording to him, both directions are expected to be opened to traffic next week.

Due to the war in Ukraine that began in February, the input prices of many construction materials and works increased. This in turn also affected the final cost of the construction work of the Assaku viaduct. The total cost of the contract excluding VAT is 3,9 million euros. The construction is financed through the Rail Baltic Estonia Connecting Europe Facility.
